My family was always big on lists for Christmas and Birthdays.  I can remember mom plopping the Sears Catalog in my lap, giving me the budget ($100 in 1960 Money was serious change), and telling me to make up my list.  I would wear that book out.  Mom always bought some things not on the list as her suprise — but she could do so knowing that there was plenty under the tree that would make me happy.
